Introduction
You've updated your website, but when you go to check it... nothing's changed. Or at least, it looks like nothing's changed. Don’t panic – your updates are probably live, but your browser is showing you an old version of the page.
Here’s what’s going on – and a quick fix.
Why this happens: it's usually the cache
When you visit a website, your browser stores parts of it — like images, styles, and code — to help it load faster the next time you visit. This is called caching. It’s great for speed, but not so great when you’re trying to view recent changes. Your browser might be showing you an out-of-date version, using those saved files instead of the new ones.
How to view a fresh version of your site
To make sure you're seeing the most recent updates, try one of these:
1. Open the site in an incognito/private window
This is the easiest option. When you open a site in Incognito mode, your browser acts like a brand-new visitor. It doesn't use any saved files (the cache), so it loads the freshest version directly from the website.
In most browsers, you can open a private window like this:
- Chrome: File > New Incognito Window
- Safari: File > New Private Window
- Edge: File > New InPrivate Window
Once you’re in, type your web address in the bar and press enter. You should see the latest version of your site.
2. Clear your cache manually
If you’d rather stick with your normal browser window, you can clear the cache by going to your browser settings > Privacy or History > Clear browsing data. Make sure "cached images and files" is ticked. Or follow the steps below by device...
On Windows (Chrome, Edge, Firefox):

- Press Ctrl + Shift + Delete
- Select “Cached images and files”
- Click Clear Data
On Mac (Safari, Chrome, Firefox):

- Press Command + Shift + R for a hard refresh
- Or go to Settings > Privacy > Clear Cache
On Mobile (iPhone & Android)
- Open your browser settings
- Find “Clear Browsing Data”
- Select Cached images and files , then clear
It’s rare, but some internet providers or hosting companies also cache content to improve speed.
