Short answer: yes, you could use AI to build a website.
The better question is… will it actually work for your business?
This morning I had an email from a client that sums it up perfectly:
“I know in theory I could use AI, but I’d like you to redesign our website… make it simpler, remove some pages, change some content.”
This is becoming more common. People try AI first. Then they realise something is not quite right.

Can I Use AI to Design My Website?
Yes.
There are tools that will:
- Build pages
- Write content
- Suggest layouts
- Generate images
It feels quick. It feels easy.
But here’s the catch.
AI builds what you ask for. It does not know what your business needs and if you know nothing about Search Engines, then it won't know to include key elements
AI Only Works As Well As The Instructions You Give It
This is not a dig at AI. It is just how it works.
It does not:
- Know your customers
- Understand your service properly
- Spot gaps in your content
- Make judgement calls based on experience
It follows instructions.
So if your instructions are unclear, the result will be unclear.
And if your knowledge of:
- SEO
- User experience
- Layout and structure
- What makes someone enquire
…is limited, your website will reflect that.
It’s like asking someone to plan your week with no context
“Plan my week.”
No idea:
- What your job is
- What your priorities are
- When you’re free
- What actually matters
You’ll get a plan.
But it might be:
- Full of the wrong things
- Missing what matters most
- Not realistic for your life
A website works the same way.
Without context, it might look organised. But it won’t work for you.

Why AI Websites Often Look Fine But Don’t Perform
This is where most DIY websites struggle.
They often:
- Look clean enough
- Have plenty of content
- Feel “done”
But:
- The structure is not built around how people search
- The content does not match what your customers are actually looking for
- The pages do not guide someone clearly to get in touch
- Important information is hard to find
So the site sits there.
It exists.
But it does not bring in enquiries.
That is the difference between design and strategy.
The Time Trade-Off Most People Underestimate
AI is meant to save time.
Sometimes it does. But often, it drags things out.
You might find yourself:
- Rewriting prompts
- Regenerating content again and again
- Moving sections around
- Trying to fix things that feel slightly off
What should take a few hours turns into days.
And that time is taken away from:
- Running your business
- Speaking to clients
- Bringing in income
A more honest way to look at it
You are either: Spending money to save time
Or Spending time to save money
Neither is wrong.
But one of those will usually cost you more in the long run.
When AI Actually Helps
AI is useful when it has direction.
It works well for:
- Drafting content ideas
- Getting started when you are stuck
- Tweaking wording once your pages are planned
- Small updates
It works less well when it is doing everything from scratch.
AI is a tool. Not the plan.
Why People Come Back After Trying AI
This is something I see often.
People get part of the way through and then stop.
Usually because:
- It feels messy
- There are too many pages
- The content does not feel right
- They are not getting enquiries
So they want help to:
- Simplify things
- Cut back what is not needed
- Make the message clearer
- Turn it into something that actually works
Exactly like the email I received this morning.
A Website That Looks Good vs One That Works
A DIY AI website can easily become something that just sits there.
It looks fine.
But it is not doing anything for your business.
A well planned site should:
- Be easy to understand
- Guide people clearly
- Build trust quickly
- Encourage someone to get in touch
That comes from structure and experience. Not just tools.
So, Should You Use AI?
Yes, you can.
But it will only be as strong as:
- The instructions you give it
- Your understanding of what your website needs to do
- How well you can guide it
If you enjoy learning and have the time, it can be a good starting point.
If you want something that works properly and brings in enquiries, it is often quicker and less stressful to get support.
